Statins
A recent article in the Clinicians Biosecurity Network Weekly Bulletin (9/27/05) suggested that statins be used to dampen the cytokine storm of H5N1 infections; statins are anti-inflammatories that can reduce TNF. (Cited in Dymaxion Web (cache) and EffectsMeasure (cache).Statins also increase the survival rate in people susceptible to severe sepsis (another condition associated with a cytokine storm). In one study, it was found that in a group of people at high risk for septic shock, only 3.7% of patients on statins developed that life threatening conditon, while 12.2% of the high risk patients not receiving statins went on to develop severe sepsis. PMID:15289367 (cache) Like Curcumin, statins inhibit the MAPK p38 pathway. PMID:15611087 (cache) Statins have a number of side effects, including muscular problems. Many of these side effects can be alleviated if Coenzyme Q10 is given with the statins. CoQ10 does not interfere with the cholesterol lowering or anti-inflammatory properties of the statins. Curcumin (from the spice turmeric) apparently does not have the same concerns as with the statins. Red Rice (a traditional fermented food of many Asian countries) is a natural source of statins. The spice Cinnamon also contains compounds that act in ways similar to the statins.
